Cousins

I’ve had this picture on my bulletin board for years. It’s a professional photo of my niece and my son taken almost 13 years ago. My niece is three years older than my son. They look the same size in the pic.

I saw this “Cousin” layout in the May/June 2007 edition of Scrapbooks, etc. Yep, I have some old magazines that I look at when that particular month rolls around again. It seems like I enjoy them more when they are ONE year old. The products have been around a bit longer and have reached all areas of the market. I still love NEW stuff; but I’m not enabled. By the time a year has passed, I have decided which “new” stuff is “ME” and am not purchasing stuff because it’s “new”.

This is another page created during the 101 Days of Summer VSBN on SplitCoastStampers. Valerie – awjmgmom – challenged us, with 101DOSF, to be inspired by “Beach Balls, Towels & Cool Blue Water”. We had to use the following elements: Circles – to represent beach balls; Stripes – to represent beach towels; Something transparent or a cool shade of blue – to represent the crystal clear waters of the beach.

My circles are in my buttons, the dots in the “S” and the “N” in the title and the polka dotted DP. My stripes are in my striped paper and the “O” of the title. The ribbon also provides a striped element. I love the SU! taffeta ribbon! We had a choice on the third option, I chose the blue – in my background DP, in my ribbon, in my button colors and even in my picture.

I love the chipboard flourish, flower and button embellishment. I painted the chipboard with gesso, smooshed on SU! Bashful Blue craft ink, versamark and SU! Clear EP. Not all at once…but in different stages.

I love this picture; precious and innocent. I probably should frame this page. I have another wallet photo I will add in the blank space beside the other photo.

I cannot believe my niece is graduating from high school on Friday. It seems like yesterday, she was dumping my shoes out of the shoe boxes in two neat piles…one of shoes and one of boxes. I hear she has become a responsible young lady, completing high school with an almost full time job. She received a scholarship to go to nursing school and also wants to study horiculture. I haven’t seen her in almost four years. I wonder what she looks like. I think she’s tall & skinny like her Daddy and has her mother’s face. I reckon I’ll find out on Friday. DH is renting a limousine and we’re all going up to Louisville in style!

SUPPLIES:
Paper – SU! Bashful Blue, SU! Darling Doodles, SU! 6 x 6 prints pack
Ink – SU! Bashful Blue craft, Versamark
Accessories – SU! Bashful Blue taffeta ribbon, Clear EP, chipboard letters, chipboard flourish, prima, SU! buttons, miscellaneous buttons, glue dots, sticky strip, heat gun, gesso

Patch Sewing Boy Scout

One busy evening…

When you work a public job, when are your evenings NOT busy? Fixing supper, doing chores, getting ready for tomorrow…

One busy evening, DS wanted to SEW! (sigh) It was 7 PM and he wanted to sew his patches on a towel. I had other ideas for his patches…but I wasn’t ready to do that just right now. (sigh) Then I thought…what could it hurt. I mean…he can sew…he wants to sew…they are his patches. I did lay them out and show him where to put them so that they all fit on nicely. But he did all the sewing. And he did an excellent job. He can wind bobbins and thread needles. He don’t quite have the hang of threading the machine, but he’s getting there.

I’m glad I took the time…cuz every night is a busy night. Not too many of them that you get to see your DS sewing!

All supplies are Stampin’ Up!, except those Prima Flowers. The Good Morning Sunshine DP and the corduroy buttons arrived Friday! Love those buttons. That solid CS is Summer Sun; Summer Sun is supposed to be the color in the DP. That CS is an off color Summer Sun…actually, I think the DP is too light of a “Summer Sun”, as the CS matches the Summer Sun in the 12 x 12 sheet of DP and not the strip on the right.

Stamped journaling lines with SU! retired Journaling Fun using SU! Chocolate Chip craft ink. Sketch is #20 from 52Sketches52Weeks. Rub-ons are Love and Happiness rub-ons in Chocolate Chip.

I love this color combo…yellow and brown…it’s so “retro”.

SUPPLIES:
Paper – SU! Good Morning Sunshine, SU! Summer Sun
Stamps – SU! retired Journaling Fun
Ink – SU! Chocolate Chip craft
Accessories – SU! Corduroy Buttons in Chocolate Chip; Prima Flowers, SU! Love & Happiness Rub-Ons in Chocolate Chip, Basic Grey Rub-On Tool, Corner Rounder, Sticky Strip, SU! Word Window Punch

One Summer Day Moving Hay

In the summer of DS tenth year, DH deemed son mature enough to drive the Ford tractor. DS job was to drive through the hayfield pulling a wagon; DH would load the rolls of hay on the wagon.

This page was created during the 101 Days of Summer Virtual Scrapbooking nights in the VSBN forum on SCS, held this past Friday and Saturday; there were 9 challenges. This is Challenge 5 or 101DOSE -“Event of the Summer” from strongcanadianbeauty – TRISH. Her challenge was to use at least 3 photos (could be on one page or a double page layout) from a summer event but the more photos the merrier!!

Here’s my page:
The 12 x 12 base is SU! Wild Wasabi; the photos are matted using a blue from my stash. The numeral – “1” – is a SU! sticky cut with Blue Suede dust bunnies…ah hum…FUN FLOCK from Stampendous. Moving hay is what we do in one summer morning AND it was DS first time driving a tractor. It was just something different. I had a really hard time with this title.

Journaling was created using Comic Sans font in MS Word, printed on PTI White. Title was die cut using Sizzix Lollipop alpha and SU! Prestwick. You may remember this plaid from the John Deere Combine double page layout. I ran the letters through Xyron and attached to the page.

Same products were used on this page. DS is moving along. He didin’t have much blacktop to travel on, as it was just a short hop from the hayfield to where we were storing the hay.

I was so proud of him. Things are so much different today than they were five years ago. Even if I knew then what I knew now, I don’t know what I would’ve done differently.

Here’s both pages together:

SUPPLIES:
Paper – SU! Wild Wasabi, SU! Prestwick DSP, Blue (unknown), PTI White
Accessories – Sizzix, Sizzix Lollipop Alpha, Xyron, SU! Sticky Cuts, Stampendous Fun Flock in Blue Suede, sticky strip

Inspecting the JD 6600 Combine

DH & I puchased a combine in October 2004. DS was 10. He was 10. He did that crooked finger waving…”Come Here Mom!”. I caught it on camera!

I love this page. It was inspired by Sally’s Sketch SBSC178 and Jennipher’s Inspiration Challenge IFC39 to mix patterned paper from different vendors. I’m using a plaid with a floral. Plaid is from SU! Prestwick and floral is a K & Company Girl Scout print. Same papers from yesterday’s layout, but with a different emphasis.

A 52sketches52weeks DT member provided a tutorial on ribbon pleating. I had to try this with staples. You’ll have to hit the stapler H A R D. Make sure your fingers are out of the way!

But boy, ain’t it purty!

Here’s today’s page and yesterday’s page together.

SUPPLIES:
Paper – SU! Textured Night of Navy, SU! Prestwick, K & Company Girl Scout line, PTI white
Accessories – SU! Button Latte, SU! Chocolate Chip Corduroy Buttons, miscellaneous SU! buttons, glue dots, ruler, white gel pen, sticky strip, Comic Sans MS font, stapler, May Arts navy 1/2″ grosgrain ribbon

JLO Bonus Challenge #01

May is one of those odd months where we have FIVE Fridays! Today is bonus challenge day!

A fellow SCSer had the “feel bads” and couldn’t decide whether to wear a new sweater or something old and comfy to work that morning. She decided on the new sweater.

Check out this sweater from Land’s End. Click the patterns until you get to the “Bright Pistachio Multi Buttrfl” – the last swatch.

This sweater made her smile and I’m sure it lifted her spirits. When you look good, you feel good.

So, what about this sweater inspires you? I LOVE THE COLORS!

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to create something inspired by this particular sweater.

Your inspiration could be the pattern, the colors, the feeling it invokes in you…anything. Please leave a comment and share what inspires you. If you upload to SCS, the keyword for this challange would be JLOBC01 (JessicaLynnOriginal Bonus Challenge 1).

Phillip the JD 6600 Combine

OK…it should say Phillip ON the JD 6600 Combine. I messed up on my journaling. I’m not changing it. Guess it will just be something to chuckle about. There’s also the camera date stamp on my page. Oh well. LOL

This is one of my favorite photos and I’m really liking this page.

I used Sketch #21 from 52sketches52weeks. I’m also taking Jennipher’s challenge – IFC30 – to mix patterned paper from different vendors. This page mixes plaid & floral. The plaid paper is from SU! Prestwick and the floral is from K & Company’s Girl Scout line. No, I wasn’t a Girl Scout. I just liked the paper!

I love the gel pen and button frame. Buttons are SU!; included in the bunch are buttons from Button Latte and the Chocolate Chip Corduroy buttons. Buttons are attached with glue dots. Here’s a close up of the buttons.

SUPPLIES:
Paper – SU! Textured Night of Navy, SU! Prestwick, K & Company Girl Scout line, PTI white
Accessories – SU! Button Latte, SU! Chocolate Chip Corduroy Buttons, miscellaneous SU! buttons, glue dots, ruler, white gel pen, sticky strip, Comic Sans MS font

Inside the Historic State Theatre

As I mentioned yesterday, the State Theatre had undergone years of renovation and it was finally completed. The grand re-opening was Mother’s Day 2009. Here’s a peek inside.

When they were working in the theatre, they uncovered murals. Flanking the stage are two murals featuring a Greek goddess holding the mask of tragedy and on the other side, the mask of comedy. On each side wall of the auditorium is what looks like a giant movie reel, decorated with flourishes. The ceiling is striped in various shades of green and burgundy. The motifs from the walls are repeated in relief at intervals in two rows down the ceiling

The layout is inspired by a Sally Sketch – SBSC 191. Cardstock colors are SU! Baha Breeze, Night of Navy and Really Rust. I punched the Night of Navy with the SU! Spiral Punch. My intention was to mimic a strip of film.

My favorite part of this layout are the flourishes at the top! I traced the negative left from some Tim Holtz grungeboard flourishes with an SU! Night of Navy Stampin’ Write Marker and filled it in. I accented certain areas of the flourish with a white gel pen. The flourishes mimic the flourishes on the wals inside the auditorium.

Titling is SU! Night of Navy craft ink stamped on PTI White. Lettering is attached with pop dots.

Here are yesterday’s and today’s pages together.

There’s so much more to tell about the State. I have one more picture and there’s a couple more pictures I want to take and include in additional pages on the State Theatre. It was a wonderful part of my life as I grew up and the history of the theatre is rich. I love history.

SUPPLIES:
Sketches – Movies at the State (left) 52sketches52weeks Sketch #6; Inside the Historic State Theatre (right) Sally Sketch SBSC191
Paper – Making Memories, SU! Urban Garden, SU! Not Quite Navy, SU! Baja Breeze, SU! Really Rust, PTI White
Stamps – Tidy Alphaget
Ink – Night of Navy craft
Accessories – Swarvoski Crystals, glue dots, K & Company rub-ons, Basic Grey rub-on tool, sticky strip, SU! Stampin’ Dimensionals, SU! Scallop Border Punch, corner rounder, SU! Sprial Punch, pop dots

Arriving at the theatre…in style

The Historic State Theatre in Elizabethtown KY is an ART DECO style theatre that recently completed several years of renovation and re-opened on Mother’s Day 2009 weekend with a showing of E.T. The last film shown at the State before its closing in the early 1980’s was E.T. We – that is me, DH, DS, Mom and Joe – attended the grand re-opening. Tickets were $10, with “free popcorn & soda”.

Boy! Did Mom & Joe arrive at the theatre…not only fashionably late at 5:45…ok…they weren’t late (show as at 6 PM), but IN STYLE BABY! Joe has this VW he’s been working on. It’s YO YO YELLOW! Mom said they got lotsa looks driving through downtown Elizabethtown. I bet. I thought it was so cool!

I used Jennipher’s inspiration challenge – IFC39 – in selecting my papers for this page. The challenge was mixing patterned papers from different vendors. She provided several combinations. This particular page features the paisleys and checks combo. The check paper is from SU! Urban Garden and the paisley paper from Making Memories.

I followed Sketch #6 from 52sketches52weeks. All supplies from my stash! I don’t have to go shopping for supplies, just basics. (sigh) The stitching is a rub-on from K & Company; received in a Wish RAK exchange. Matted one ticket and attached with pop dots; other ticket is attached with sticky strip. Journaling was done in a Word document using Comic Sans MS font and printed on Baha Breeze.

The only candy they had at the refreshment stand was Reeses Pieces. Anyone know why?

It was a trip down the memory lane for me, DH, Mom & probably Joe. DS loved the theatre. He just wished the screen and the seats were bigger. Ummm…son, that’s the way it was “back then”. He had a blast; he had always wanted to see E.T. It was really cool to see Drew Barrymore as a child; it’s hard to believe she & I are roughly the same age! I really did feel old that day, in the good way.

Now, please leave a comment as to WHY Reeses Pieces was the ONLY candy they had at the refreshment stand! Not my favorite candy…but it was OK.

SUPPLIES:
Paper – Making Memories, SU! Urban Garden, SU! Not Quite Navy, SU! Baja Breeze
Accessories – Swarvoski Crystals, glue dots, K & Company rub-ons, Basic Grey rub-on tool, sticky strip, SU! Stampin’ Dimensionals, SU! Scallop Border Punch, corner rounder

Heading for the Open Road

On DS 14th birthday (and that was last year), a friend brought over his Harley and gave DS a ride. DS was super excited. Jess (of Jessica Lynn Original) came out with this cool biker owl dude…Brentwood…on Thursday; DS had picked out some Harley papers & stickers one day at Micheal’s…I knew I had all the ingredients for a perfect layout!

I used a favorite creative process (progressive page) to create Friday’s page. For today’s page, I wanted the DP to shine. I trimmed off half an inch on each side of the DP and mounted it to SU! textured black CS. I know…but at the time I laid out this page, I didn’t have regular black. Oh DUH! I just had a light “bub” moment…my SU! order came on Friday, I could have changed out the paper BEFORE I put the page together on SATURDAY! (smacking forehead) LOL Oh well…too late to worry about THAT! I covered up all that texture; but ya know, the part that shows has this neat texture. LOL.

I really do like how I laid out the pictures. I took them from different angles and they are laid in a counter clockwise fashion. Here they are at the top, getting ready to take off. They go around me and turn towards the road…I have the pic of them in the yard. Then there they are on the road. They ride off…(they also ride off into the back of the page).

I love the titling. It’s a combination of Tidy Alphabet and Harley Davidson sticker alpha letters. Tidy alphabet is stamped in SU! Basic Black craft ink on SU! Brushed Silver, and then embossed using SU! Black EP. They are attached with pop dots.

Here’s Friday’s page and today’s page together.

Pretty cool, huh?

SUPPLIES:
Stamps – Biker Brentwood (JessicaLynnOriginal) digital stamp, SU! Tidy Alphabet
Paper – SU! Basic Black, SU! Brushed Silver, EK Success Harley Davidson, other 12 x 12 sheet – unknown
Ink – SU! Basic Black craft ink
Accessories – heat gun, pop dots, SU! Black embossing powder, corner rounder, sticky strip, EK Success Harley Davidson lettering & stickers, SU! Stampin Write Markers, SU! Stampin’ Dimensionals

JLO Tutorial #01 – Creating Progressively

Got scrapper’s block? I’ve found a cure…create a progressive page.

One of the easiest ways to scrap is to make a progressive page. You can even apply this to cardmaking!

It sounds hard, but the concept is really quite simple. If you’ve seen those little 6 x 6 scrapbooks…I mean…your picture is 3 1/2 x 5 or 4 x 6…the picture is going to take up most of the 6 x 6 page, right? Add some journaling and a few embellishments, maybe a strip of scrap paper & VIOLA! You have the beginnings of a progressive page.

Then take your 6 x 6 page and add it to an 8 1/2 x 11 page. I took my 6 x 6 panel and tilted it on a 8 1/2 x 11 piece of SU! Brushed Silver CS. I added a picture of the bike and a digital stamped image of Biker Brentwood.

Once your 8 1/2 x 11 page is completed, add it to a piece of 12 x 12 cardstock. The 12 x 12 paper is a grayish / tan I found in my stash. I attached a strip of Harley Davidson DP along the side and added the 8 1/2 x 11 page. I could stop here and call this page done.

However, I had two more pictures I wanted to use. I added these to the 12 x 12 section, layering the pictures under the 6 x 6 panel and the Biker Brentwood.

So, how do you apply progressive pages to cardmaking? Make an Artist Trading Card and then bump it up to a standard card. There’s only so much you can put on the smaller versiou. Once you add the smaller version to the larger piece, you can add more elements.

Your challenge should you choose to accept it…is to create progressively.

Please leave a comment with a link to your project – scrapbook page or card. I would love to see your projects! If you upload to SCS, please use the keyword JLOTU01 (JessicaLynnOriginal Tutorial #01).
